Maine Maple Sugar Sunday...

... actually took place today in most parts of the state. Usually the fourth Sunday in March, it's a day when Sugar Houses open their doors to the public so that syrup makers can share information about their craft and products. We decided it was time to get out of the house and spent about an hour or so at Goranson Farm this morning. We toured the Sugar House and listened to Farmer Rob talk about his maple trees and syrup production. It was too cold for the sap to be running today, so he wasn't actually boiling. Connor and Michaela were fascinated -- even though the lack of fresh sap meant no samples this year. Click here for more maple syrup info.

Some basic facts of note include:

• It takes 40 quarts of sap to make one quart of syrup
• Maple trees cannot be tapped until they are at least 40 years old and 12" or more in diameter
• A 40 year old tree will yield enough sap for only one quart of syrup each year
• One gallon of syrup weighs about 11 pounds

That sounds like fun! We don't have anything like that around here...a lot of corn.:) Too bad you couldn't get any samples. Do they sell it there too? Or do that have certain stores that their syrup is at? Very interesting. I learned something.

Did you get your easter eggs dyed? Is Connor feeling better? Taran seems to be getting better each day. I hope you have a wonderful Easter!!
